Multiple chapters across the country have either completed recruitment or are busy recruiting their next new member class.  Tri Sigma has welcomed hundreds of new members into the sisterhood this fall and hopes to continue to add sisters over the semester and year.  Like Executive Council said in the back to school email, “Not only is recruitment important to build our sisterhood and continue the perpetual bonds of friendship, it is also the lifeblood of our organization and is critical to the continued success of Tri Sigma. Every member within our 112 chapters has the opportunity to make a connection and an impact on our organization. It is the friendships you build that make Tri Sigma a premier national organization.”

Tri Sigmas are putting in a fantastic effort this August and September to make a lasting impact for the sisterhood. Let’s congratulate some chapters that are reaching their goals. Please join in congratulating the following chapters on meeting quota* during primary recruitment.

Theta Eta Chapter at Old Dominion University received several chapter awards, and one member was nominated for and won a Selfless Helper Award from the campus.

Brianna Kabalkin was recognized for all the ways she serves Tri Sigma and the Old Dominion University campus with the Selfless Helper Award.

Brianna Kabalkin was recognized for all the ways she has served Tri Sigma since joining in fall 2017. She’s held multiple leadership roles, including taking on the role of Risk Manager last year. She planned the chapter’s first activities they held to recognize National Hazing Prevention Week, including hosting a table for students to sign anti-hazing pledges and pick up awareness ribbons and hazing prevention tips. She also created an initiative to keep members who are commuters safe on campus. She served as Vice President of Standards on the Panhellenic Council and also participates in other campus organizations, including professional fraternity Phi Eta Sigma, the Greek Honor Society, Order of Omega, and the PHC executive board.

The Chapter also won the four excellence awards for Scholarship, Community Relationships, Leadership Development and Values and Purpose, which are based on a standards evaluation that ODU requires all fraternity and sorority life to complete. The chapter also tied with Alpha Xi Delta for overall Chapter of the Year.

Alpha Chi Chapter won two awards from Murray State University. Outstanding New Member Educational Program was awarded to the chapter on campus with the most active mentoring, effective and interesting new member program. Murray appreciates the extra effort that Alpha Chi put in to our already structured national program, including various group sharing activities and team building exercises. Our chapter utilizes the new member period to make sure that they feel immediately at home, and through this we always feel that we grow closer as a chapter.

The chapter was also awarded for Outstanding Educational Program. This award is given to the chapter with the most relevant and effective programs regarding alcohol and drug awareness and at least one additional program of our choice. Our additional program was rape awareness, bystander intervention, and self-defense training. The chapter felt these topics were most relevant and we received this award because of the impact it had on our members.

Previous President Hannah Huckeby won Greek Woman of the year, which is awarded to the most outstanding leader within the Greek community.

The spring semester is the season for Greek Weeks on university and college campuses across the country. Our chapters had fun competing and took home some wins from their campus competitions!

Beta Xi, Southeast Missouri State University: “Tri Sigma, with the help of our pairings Sigma Chi and Theta Xi, was able to donate the most blood in the Greek Week blood drive. 100% of the pairing donated blood, and because of that 567 lives were saved!”

The Theta Kappa Chapter won several events during Greek Week.

Theta Kappa, University of Wisconin-LaCrosse: “We won first place in the following Greek Week events: chalk drawing, wearing letters/canned goods donation, lip-sync battle, and Greek Games (flag football). This was really exciting for us because out of the three years we have been on campus, this is the second time we have won Greek Week! We are so proud to have shown so much Sigma spirit through teamwork, support, and encouragement throughout the week. We couldn’t have done it without each other!”

Eta Beta Chapter member Kelsey Branham organized a dog food donation to the Newberry Animal Shelter during Greek Week.

Eta Beta, Newberry College: “Our sister, Kelsey Branham, organized with a company for a donation of three pallets of dog food to be donated to the Newberry Animal Shelter. We are so thankful for her to work to make a donation in our name and to give back to the community. This donation was made during Greek Week. We wanted to do something to help out the community and what better way than to help out local animals who are in need.”

Theta Delta, Lindenwood University: ”Some of the awards we received at the last Greek awards were Chapter of the Year, Outstanding New Member, Greek Week winners, and President of the Year.”

The Eta Kappa Chapter at Texas Woman’s University made it their mission this semester to raise more money than ever before for the Tri Sigma Foundation.

The chapter knew they wanted to do something big to raise money and decided to host their first Princess Tea Fundraiser. Fundraising chair Alexa Farrell created, planned and executed the event with the help of her committee. During the tea, Eta Kappa members dressed up as princesses and hosted a tea party for the Denton, Texas community. Members passed out thousands of flyers to schools, churches, nail salons, retail stores, restaurants and more in town to help attract parents who would pay to bring their children to the tea.

“Our event was a huge success,” Chapter President Mattison Pennington said. “We ended up raising $2,000 for the Foundation and we won the Best Program award for the event from TWU Greek Life.”

The chapter plans to make this an annual event and hopes to increase their fundraising goal each year. Mattison said the chapter had never hosted an event like this before, but the risk was worth the reward. She contributes the success of the event to using the chapter’s CrowdChange fundraising page and their promotion tactics.

“We had separate ticket options for General Admission and Princess Package,” Mattison said. “People that ordered princess packages for $20 got to come in 30 minutes early and have their photo taken with all of the princesses. They also got to sit in the front tables of the room.”

The chapter sold out princess packages in about two weeks, so everyone else paid general admission of $15. People with these tickets came in to the event right at the beginning and still got to go take individual photos with their favorite princesses. The chapter also reached out to restaurants and got a lot of things donated to help offset the cost of the event. The chapter found a family friend to help make some costumes and ordered the rest online. The venue gave the chapter a discounted price as well because they were raising money for a philanthropy. The chapter also sold T-shirts and accepted monetary donations at the event.

Members at Epsilon Rho Chapter, Minnesota State University-Mankato, moved away from hosting a 5K fundraiser and instead held an event that helped them engage the rest of the fraternity/sorority community.  The chapter hosted “Sundaes with Tri Sigma”, an ice cream bar and raffle event to raise money for the Tri Sigma Foundation.

“We are pleased to announce this is our first philanthropy that we had members of every other chapter on campus be represented,” Chapter President Caitlyn Jones said. “We felt so much support and had so much fun! We raised just over $1,400 during this event and we couldn’t be more proud of our philanthropy event.”

In the past, the chapter has hosted a 5k walk/run in the spring, but scrapped the idea due to unpredictable weather and wanted to change up the event.

“We were looking for something fun and semi-easy,” Caitlyn said. “Our campus has a history of selling philanthropy tickets for $5, so we decided that doing $3 in advance and $5 at the door would be helpful because people would think ‘it’s only $5’.”

The chapter used relationships they have with other groups on campus and tabling in the student union to sell tickets. The chapter also hosted a bake sale and attended other fraternity and sorority chapter meetings to publicize the event. The chapter raised money by having members sign up in groups to create a basket they would raffle off during the fundraiser. For our raffles, each girl signed up for a basket that they thought would be fun to create. One of the baskets focused on health and wellness, and used donated items from a local wellness store.

Epsilon Kappa members gather after hosting a third successful Purple Gala, raising $3,100 for the March of Dimes.

The Epsilon Kappa Chapter at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh held their third annual Purple Gala event to support the March of Dimes and raised $3,100.

The Purple Gala includes a silent auction, brunch and speakers. Chapter leaders said after the Tri Sigma Foundation and March of Dimes became philanthropic partners, they wanted to create a yearly event to raise awareness and money to support the March of Dimes’ mission. The gala, which is open to Tri Sigmas, their guests and members of the campus community, starts with mingling and looking at the silent auction items, then the brunch starts. After the brunch, two members who helped coordinate the event spoke about the chapter’s efforts to support the March of Dimes. A March of Dimes family also spoke, and brought their children to talk about their pregnancy journey, and how March of Dimes supported them. The event ends announcing the winners of the silent auction items and thanking everyone for attending.

Chapter leaders said the most important parts of planning a successful Purple Gala include finding an affordable venue, food, coming up with a head count/guest list, as well as coordinating the silent auction and speakers. The chapters raises money through ticket sales and silent auction items. Epsilon Kappa takes pride in being able to raise awareness and money for the March of Dimes’ mission. The chapter would be happy to help any chapters that are interested in hosting a similar event. Reach out to Chapter Advisor Kim Katz at kimdkatz@yahoo.comfor more information.

April can be a stressful month. Between finals and the end of the academic year approaching, along with Greek Weeks, philanthropy events, competitions and more, sometimes it can feel like there’s little time left to have fun with your sisters. Read on for sisterhood ideas from chapters around the country you can use either this semester or save for the fall!

Epsilon Phi, University of North Carolina Wilmington: “Our chapter celebrates sisterhood by creating events encouraging a great bonding experience in which anybody from the chapter can attend. Our sisterhood opportunities can include events like simple lunch dates, movie nights in the suite, or doing things like Ice Skating or Defy Gravity. To help encourage members to go to our events we like to listen to the interests and ideas of the chapter. Sisterhood Chair may plan the events but they take into account what the chapter wants to do to create a sense of excitement for the events. Within our chapter meetings, we celebrate sisterhood in simple yet encouraging gestures. These gestures can vary from our violets (shout-outs) to one another to when we pass around our “take away box.” This box is a chance for sisters to take some sort of encouraging, inspirational, or even funny note from the box written by other sisters to brighten their day.”

Alpha Chi, Murray State University: “On our day off, we had a low cost spa day sisterhood where we made face masks, lip scrubs, manicures, pedicures, and did massages. We wore pjs, watched movies and enjoyed each other’s company while relaxing at the house. Everyone had a great time even though it wasn’t super extravagant! We also have a new chair, Spirit Chair. Our new Spirit Chair Melina Eaker started a Monthly newsletter called “Sigma Sunshine” to send out announcements, not only about intramurals and Sigma events, but also sports/events occurring on campus. The newsletter also includes sisters who have birthdays that month, fun facts, friendly reminders and next month she even plans on doing a feature of “Why we love Sigma,” which will be compiled from submissions. We also recently held our large sisterhood, which was a lot of fun! The theme was Talladega Nights, so we did race car related activities and then dressed like we were going to the racetrack. There were pre-formed groups designed to get us to hang out with people we don’t normally talk to. Within these groups, we created our own cardboard box cars, made team names, changes and cheers, and then competed in various mini games (while wearing our cars). Our teams had a relay completing the games we set up and it was really exciting to watch and cheer each other on since everyone was really into it. This large sisterhood was a blast and our chairs Liz McKenna and Shannon Robinson did a great job with planning everything out!”

Epsilon Sigma, Virginia Commonwealth University: “Every Wednesday we host sisterhood events where our sisters come and participate in bonding activities. We use games and activities to create an inclusive and positive environment. Often our activities include speaking about why we appreciate Sigma and our sisters. One game we played,  we tossed around a ball of yarn creating a web. Every time we tossed it the sister it was given to was told by the sister passing it to her why she appreciated her. It is touching to see how much Tri Sigma and Sigma love has brought us all together.”

Alpha Mu, University of Louisiana-Lafayette: “The women of the Alpha Mu chapter are preparing for our spring sisterhood retreat with much enthusiasm. The event will include pajamas, pancakes, and tons of engaging activities in order to build relationships throughout the chapter. Our sisterhood chairwomen, Mackenzie Gondran and Morgan Boudreaux, are working tirelessly to make this sisterhood event one of the best ones thus far. When asked what makes this sisterhood retreat different from the ones in previous years, Mackenzie and Morgan said these activities are not only so we can learn more about our sisters, but also so we can learn more about the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and the Alpha Mu chapter. So, this spring, you can find the women of Alpha Mu in our pjs, bonding with our sisters and falling in love with our chapter all over again!”

Nu, University of Central Missouri: “This last semester we put on some very successful sisterhood events. Right after bid day we had a roller-skating sisterhood where we rented out the entire place for an hour and a half. The venue provided great games and allowed each member to have a free soda. We got great photos for our social media and video footage for recruitment video. We also had a sisterhood sleepover where we ordered pizza, played games, and watched movies!”

February is the Month of the Scholar! Did you know that any Tri Sigma member who achieves a 4.0 GPA for two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters can receive a Scholarship Ring from the National Organization?  The Scholarship Ring Order Form is on the new Chapter Portal and the Education Director can complete to honor any members achieving this goal!

In honor of the Month of the Scholar, read more about how chapters are rewarding members who focus on academics:

Alpha Chi, Murray State University: The chapter gives out “Smartie Panties” every three months by entering the names of members who submit A’s they earned each week into a drawing for a Victoria Secret gift card. A’s that are submitted are announced in chapter meeting each week. The Education Director also hands out Smarties candies taped to a study tip at chapter meeting once per month.

Beta Epsilon, Western Illinois University: Beta Epsilon encourages members to focus on their studies by promoting good grades and recognizing members for their achievements. At the end of each semester, the education director recognizes the top 10 sisters who earned the highest GPA. For instance, one semester the top 10 members were awarded t-shirts to validate their hard work. The members enjoy these incentives and work to try to be in the top 10.

Epsilon Sigma, Virginia Commonwealth University: The chapter reserves library rooms every day for sisters to take advantage of library resources, as well as allowing members who are in similar majors to meet and study together.  Members submit the A’s they earn throughout the semester and they get a sister shout-out every week at chapter meeting. The chapter’s favorite incentive is that the two sisters with the most A’s at the end of the semester win a “Smarty Panty,” which include gift cards to Victoria Secret. Members who make the Dean’s List are gifted Sigma apparel.

Zeta Pi, Virginia Wesleyan University: Zeta Pi has many members who achieve good grades, so the chapter has made awards for members to encourage them to continue achieving academically. The chapter also highlighted sisters who made the Dean’s List on the chapter’s social media accounts. Zeta Pi also plans to make goodie bags to encourage everyone to keep studying and improving their grades this spring semester.

Tri Sigma chapters empower members to earn community service hours both individually and through hosting chapter-wide community service events and projects. Our chapters also recognize the importance of being philanthropic, whether that is raising money for the Tri Sigma Foundation or March of Dimes, or participating in other organizations’ philanthropy events. Read on to learn about what other chapters are doing to serve and raise money for their communities for inspiration for your own chapters!

Epsilon Sigma, Virginia Commonwealth University: Epsilon Sigma works to identify community service projects by focusing on Richmond’s core community issues of poverty/youth outreach and promoting overall community health. The chapter is planning an Earth Day clean-up, which consists of sisters contributing their time/efforts towards a cleaner Richmond! The chapter will be partnering with the -school’s environmental club for a trash pick-up. Members plan to partner with VCU’s ‘Ram Pantry,’ which allows students in need of groceries and supplies to access those at a lower price. The chapter will collect canned goods and essential toiletries to donate to the pantry. The chapter also plans to seek out opportunities to partner with other fraternities and sororities for community service projects. The chapter has plans to work with the Ronald McDonald Foundation Charity at VCU’s medical campus.

Gamma Zeta, Slippery Rock University: The chapter has several campus and community service events planned, including St. Jude’s Up till 2. The chapter has signed up three teams and already started fundraising for the event. The day of, the teams will compete with other organizations in rally races and fun games to raise money for St. Jude!  Gamma Zeta also participates in Relay for Life by hosting a booth with snacks for sale to raise money for the event. Members also take turns walking during the Relay to help raise cancer awareness. The members also enjoy making tie blankets once or twice a semester for babies in the NICU at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. A new community service project the chapter has planned for the spring semester is a Sigma Service Day, where members will participate in a large project benefiting the local community.

Nu Chapter at the University of Central Missouri enlists support from the Fraternity/Sorority community each year for its Mr. Robbie Page Pageant, which benefits the Tri Sigma Foundation’s mission of Sigma Serves Children.

Nu, University of Central Missouri: Nu Chapter has started raising money for the March of Dimes internally by collecting members’ spare dimes in a large liter bottle. Members who donate dimes each week have their name entered into a drawing for items like candy or a pass to skip study hours. The chapter also holds an all-men pageant annually called the Robbie Page Pageant, its largest philanthropy event. Sororities and Fraternities pay $100 to sponsor a contestant to represent their chapter. The pageant consists of an opening act where all the men perform a funny dance act together, a talent round, and a fish bowl question portion. The chapter also raises money by selling tickets for the event. Members also collect donations of goods from local businesses to auction off at the pageant. Nu Chapter also hosts Soak – a – Sigma to raise money for their philanthropic focuses. The chapter has a dunk tank on campus for people to donate and try to dunk a Sigma member.
